In the spring of 2022, the foundation FruitFul City at Floriade Almere commissioned a number of artists to create 12 sculptures around a tiny church in a garden with biblical plants and shrubs, representing the 12 qualities of the Spirit from the Bible: Peace, love, gentleness, joy, compassion, goodness, faith, faithfulness, patience, hope, kindness and self-control.
The theme of the artwork which I designed for this project is self-control.
The underlying concept belongs to a new series of artworks by ANNUSCH, with hand-thrown ceramic “stones” as a repeating element.
As the first artwork of this series I created the art piece Floating Stones at Natuurpark Lelystad in the summer of 2020, on the occasion of the annual open-air exhibition “Kunst Natuurpark Lelystad” by the Artist Association Flevoland KF.
The artwork Balance as the second artwork of this series is a fountain, consisting of four large, hollow, hand-thrown ceramic stones stacked on top of each other. The bottom and largest stone with a diameter of 70 cm contains also the water and the pump.
In our lives as human beings, we are daily confronted with things and situations that have the potential to seduce us and distract us from ourselves. The art of not getting lost in those things lies primarily in balance and inner equilibrium. When we are able to stay inwardly balanced and true to ourselves, we find it easier to resist temptations on the outside and self-control becomes a cinch. The basis is mainly love for ourselves, from which love for others also flows.
In my design, self-love and inner balance are symbolised by the four balancing stones. The lively water of the fountain symbolises the joy resulting from equanimity and balance.
