Princess Tree

At the 1977 Tree Festival, Princess Margriet planted a tree in front of the building ‘De Hulk’ in Almere Haven. Symbolically, it was the forty-eight millionth tree in Flevoland. She thus also gave the go-ahead for the annual Tree Festival in Almere. The plane tree stood in its spot for almost 35 years and was an icon for residents. However, when the building ‘De Hulk’ was renovated in 2013, the tree had make way for the extension of the building and the new reception room.

Returning the tree
As the tree was a clear icon for the neighbourhood and belonged to the building, it was very unfortunate that it had to be cut down. However, the tree could not be given another place, so it had to be removed anyway. With artwork ‘The Princess Tree’, the artist gave the tree back to the residents. The artwork was ‘planted’ at the spot where the original tree once stood.

The Princess Tree – inspiration for the artist
The artwork ‘Princess Tree’ is a reminder of the forty-eight millionth tree in Flevoland, which was planted by a princess. A tree planted by a princess sounds like a fairytale and inspired artist ANNUSCH to depict a tree in full bloom. Magnolia blossoms symbolise spring, love of nature, idealism and strong principles. In keeping with the qualities and character traits expected of a princess.
