Bursting Bowl
Art washes the dust of everyday life from the soul.
Pablo Picasso
What a surprise, or at first a shock, when I took this bowl out of the kiln!
The crazy crack was not intentional and was caused quite unexpectedly by the fact that the so called glaze tension of the turquoise glaze on the inside and the white glaze on the outside of the bowl quite obviously did not match.
During the glaze firing at 1240°C, the glaze components melt, and when the glazes harden again during cooling, the use of different types of clay and glazes can also result in different tension ratios.
However, I had never before experienced such a tension which tore my entire bowl apart.
After a closer look, I realised that the circumstances described above had created a unique work of art, which was then sold very quickly.
Soon I would like to try to make more of these crazy bowls in the same way, to see if they crack so well again without breaking completely. That would make a great series.
I’m looking forward to it!
