Raku is a traditional Japanese firing technique for ceramics, in which oxygen is extracted from the ceramic work during firing (reduction firing), enabling the most beautiful glaze effects to be achieved.

Traditionally, ceramic work is fired in a raku kiln at relatively low temperatures up to a maximum of 1000 degrees. Qualitatively similar to earthenware, raku work is therefore normally not waterproof and thus not suitable for making utensils such as vases, bowls, jugs, etc.

In my work, I see it as a challenge to push the boundaries within the scope of ceramics, and I have now succeeded in using raku firing to make high-quality, high-fired stoneware in the most dazzling colours with homemade glazes according to my own recipes. As a result, these raku pieces are completely waterproof, unlike traditional raku work.
