Two In One Flowerpot

The Two In One Flower Pot is a one of a kind indoor flowerpot that does not require any inner pot, because the design of the flowerpot integrates a collection tray for excess water.

The Two In One Flower Pot tricks with its simplicity and is highly functional. The broken surface with its symmetrical structure is reminiscent of the structure of dried-out clay in the Wadden Sea, the largest unbroken system of intertidal sand and mud flats in the world. At low tide, the clay dries out and forms into amazing structures.

The Two In One Flower Pot is available in two different versions: Either made of high fired, black stoneware clay with a broken surface of white clay slip or vice versa, made from white stoneware clay with a broken surface of black clay slip.

The making process of the white version is as such:
After preparing the black stoneware clay, both the flowerpot and the drip tray are created on the potter’s wheel. At the beginning of the process I deliberately keep the top of the flowerpot slender and cylindrical. In the next step, the surface of the cylinder is covered with a thin layer of white clay slip. After brief drying, a layer of waterglass (natriumsilicate) is applied, which in turn hardens after a short drying time. Only now does the flowerpot take its final shape by slowly pushing the clay from inside of the vessel to the outside on the potter’s wheel. This causes the white surface, which had been sealed by the layer of waterglass, to crack open like dry earth after a heavy rain. Depending on the thickness and the dryness of the different layers, the white craquelé appears differently each time. This makes each flower pot totally unique and gives it its own character. Even for me as a creator, the working process always remains exciting and the result surprising.
